Verismo, like realism, defines itself against the Romantic period and its mythical and supernatural stories. It concentrates on the stories of ordinary people and tries to portray a true picture of society. The theme of truth is strong in both operas even from today's perspective.
Cavalleria rusticana is a story of love and infidelity that ends in a tragic death. The dramatic plot is also supported by captivating music that enhances the atmosphere and emotions. Pagliacci is more complex but one of the themes that eventually became crucial for the story is the life of artists and their place in society. At the same time, the theme of theatre life is essential in Pagliacci. Can we recognize what is rehearsed and what is improvised? What is theatre and what is reality? What is intentional and what is out of control?
