About Theatre

The Moravian Theatre Olomouc is an integral part of the cultural events in Olomouc and the Olomouc Region and has ambitions to become an important cultural centre beyond the borders of the region and abroad.

As the only theatre in Central and Eastern Moravia, we boast three artistic ensembles and our own orchestra. On stage you can see productions of drama, ballet and opera, as well as operettas, musicals, dance galas and fairy tales. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our dramaturgy and selection of authors, so we present not only classical titles, but also lesser-known works, original works or modern adaptations.

A repertoire that will entertain, move and satisfy even the most demanding audience.

Popular drama plays include A Year in the Village directed by Janka Ryšánek Schmiedtová, Manon Lescaut by Hana Mikolášková, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest directed by Pavel Khek, the now cult comedy by Roman Vencl and Michaela Doleželová When the Lights Go Out or David Drábek's original play Sherlock Holmes: The Murders of Bearded Women. Dance lovers will be delighted by the timeless production Bolero & Carmen by Italian choreographers Riccardo De Nigris and Giorgio Madia, the narrative historical ballet Ivan the Terrible, adapted by Libor Vaculík, The Picture of Dorian Gray or the poetic Solo for Three, for which dancer Sergio Méndez Romero received the Thalia Award 2022. Musical audiences were captivated by Nabucco, Bluebeard's Castle directed by Daniela Špinar, Rusalka directed by CABANI and the musical Hello, Dolly! A hit in the children's repertoire are the musical fairy tales Minioperas by Uhlíř and Svěrák, in which, in addition to adults performers, small singers and dancers also perform.

Workshops and events for children

We strive to open up to young people and nurture the next generation of regular visitors. Atelier MDO, an educational platform aimed at all ages, organises discussions with artists, thematic workshops, ballet workshops or open rehearsals. For high school students, it conducts educational workshops for selected productions.

Festivals

From June to August we organise the open air festival Moravian Theatre Summer, where we present popular comedies and other special programmes. It also includes open-air travelling in the surrounding villages. Currently we are trying to focus even more on participation in prestigious domestic and international theatre and music festivals.

History

The Moravian Theatre Olomouc has been a permanent Czech theatre venue since 1920, when it continued the ninety-year-old history of the Königliches städtisches Theater in the building on today's Upper Square.

Many important names are connected with the history of the Olomouc theatre. Among them are Gustav Mahler, Eduard Haken, Beno Blachut, Oldřich Stibor, Josef Bek and František Řehák.

The classicist building of the Moravian Theatre Olomouc was built in 1830 by the architect Karel Biefeld according to a plan by the Viennese architect Josef Kornhäusel. The auditorium and the façade of the theatre were modified in 1940-1941 by architect Karel Fischer . Today, it is one of the most important immovable cultural monuments, at the same time representing a lively cultural centre of the city and the Olomouc region.

Moravian Theatre Olomouc is the only theatre with three artistic ensembles in Central and Eastern Moravia. The theatre building is mainly used for ballets, operas, classical operettas, musicals, dramas and fairy tales, or for concerts of the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra in the adjacent Reduta Hall.
