Gaetano Donizetti

Don Pasquale

Comic opera in three acts

Opera Don Pasquale counts among later pieces which Gaetano Donizetti wrote as an already experienced composer (composed only in 11 days!). It is a typical opera buffa (comic opera) based on the first commedia dell´arte.

Artistically and burlesquely escalated situations lead into moving scenes full of humour and wit, vocal parts come out of melodious virtuosity and other musical composition serves mostly as a means of reaching comic effect.

The basic motive of Donizetti’s  opera centres around the troubles affecting an ageing bachelor wishing to marry a young girl. Many brilliant arias and famous duo of baritone and bass sound a few times in this opera.
