Nikolaj Vasiljevič Gogol

The Government Inspector

I´m not going to squeal but one must report on things!

This ageless satirical comedy from 1836 ranks among the most famous works of world dramatic literature and its repeated introduction on our stage was decided by you, our audience. This happened through a public questionnaire in which you were able to choose from three productions which were presented in the first season of the Moravian Theatre in 1920. In competition with Shakespeare’s King Lear and Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, Gogol’s The Government Inspector won unambiguously and by a wide margin. The story of an insignificant clerk, Chlestakov, who is, by mistake, considered a government inspector and thus turns the whole life of a small town upside down returns to our stage twenty-two years after its last presentation in 1998.

The director of this comedy classic will be the popular Czech actress Jana Paulová, who is fully at home in the comedy genre. Although she has devoted most of her career to acting, this is not her debut in the role of a director. On 1st November 2018, her comedy Lady Oscar had its premiere in the Kalich Theatre in Prague and Jana took over its direction, as well as the interpretation of the main female role.
